Welcome to the Senior Minister Search Committee webpage. University Baptist Church is in the midst of a search for our next senior minister. The search committee will update this page periodically as the search progresses with information about where we are in the process, what the committee is doing, etc. We will not post any confidential information or information on specific candidates. Our goal is to keep the congregation informed about the process. Please contact any member of the search committee if you have concerns, comments, or questions.

To learn more about UBC, we encourage candidates to explore our website and see our Church Profile.

The Senior Minister Search Committee has identified a small pool of finalists for the UBC Senior Minister Position. The finalists are a diverse and highly talented group. All have post-graduate degrees and outstanding qualifications.

Their initial visits for a 1-2 day stay in Charlottesville will begin the week of April 24th through early May. The activities for each finalist will include an Emotion Quotient (EQ) interview, dinner, tours of UBC and the City of Charlottesville and an opportunity to get to know us and our church in a very professional and relaxed setting. The committee is hopeful these activities will help the finalists decide if God is calling them to UBC.

All the data collected from introductory conversations, the 90-minute skype interviews, resumes, reference checks, sermons and EQ traits with evaluation matrices and on-site interviews will be used to select a final candidate.

All eight of the members of the Sr. Minister Search Committee were able to be present for the 90 minute interviews we conducted with our top 8 candidates – over a 10 day period.  Quite a feat in itself.  We are more convinced than ever that the process we are following with Bill Wilson’s assistance (Center for Healthy Churches) is an excellent one for obtaining the best “fit” for UBC.  We are now actively checking by phone with references and listening to sermons of a smaller number of candidates with the goal of determining which candidates to invite for a face-to-face interview with the search committee sometime in the coming weeks. Please continue to pray for God’s guidance for us and for each of the candidates as we continue the process.

March 29, 2017

The search committee completed its initial round of phone interviews with our 12 candidates and narrowed the list down to 8 candidates. We are now conducting 60-90 minute video interviews with each of those 8 candidates. We are halfway through, and plan to complete those in the next week.

We appreciate your continued prayers throughout this process. As always, feel free to contact any member of the search committee with any questions or concerns you may have.

Members of the search committee have visited the Sunday morning Bible Study classes to share where we are in the search process as well as getting input from our members. We want to thank everyone for allowing us time to speak with you, answer questions, and for your feedback. Be assured our goal is to find the best minister to meet the needs of UBC. For those members we missed, we are planning another Q & A session after worship on Sunday, March 19 in Fellowship Hall.

We now have 12 candidates. Initial phone conversations with each candidate will be completed by March 14 th . The purpose of these calls is to get to know the candidates a little better, to answer any questions they may have, and to gauge their continued interest in UBC.

The Search Committee is now meeting most Sunday evenings at 6:00.

February 20, 2017

The search committee will begin vetting potential candidates next week.  We will begin with a preliminary phone call to each candidate on our short list to understand their interest in UBC and let them know of our interest in them.  Some of the candidates have only agreed to the preliminary call and are quite happy in their current positions.  We will need to “sell” UBC as well as vet the candidates during the call.  We continue to accept resumes as the process proceeds, not because we do not have good candidates in the pool, we do, but to remain open to a last minute calling.

To be as transparent as possible, members of the search committee will be visiting the Bible Study classes to talk and listen.  Members of UBC are always welcome to contact anyone on the search committee with comments or concerns.  As we kick into high gear, please pray for our discernment of God’s will in the calling of our next senior minister.

The Senior Minister Search Committee met with Bill Wilson Sunday evening, January 15, for 2 hours. We discussed a timeline, the senior minister profile, and the process going forward. Hiring practices are changing. One of the topics discussed was that we are recruiting a new senior minister. The best candidates probably will not come through advertising, but through soliciting resumes from ministers who match our profile. Bill Wilson is actively seeking candidates, and we continue to accept resumes. Candidates may send a Letter of Interest and resume to UBCSeniorMinisterSearch@gmail.com.

The search committee will meet again on February 12th and anticipate meeting more frequently after that.

The Senior Minister Search Committee met yesterday after worship to finalize plans for January 15th when our consultant, Bill Wilson from Center for Healthy Churches, joins us for a presentation during the Bible Study hour and preaches at the 11:00 am worship service.  Dr. Wilson was a pastor for many years and has a wealth of knowledge about moderate Baptist churches and an amazing number of contacts in the Baptist community.

We continue a nationwide search for our next minister.  The best candidates will likely be solicited rather than coming to us through an ad.  So again, if you know someone you think would be perfect for the job, please pass the name and a contact information to anyone on the search committee.

Below are the links to several articles sent to us by Bill Wilson that might be of interest to the congregation. We hope that you will find them helpful.

Each member has pledged confidentiality throughout the process, but we will share general information and try to be as transparent as possible without breaking that confidentiality.  We understand the importance of our work for the future of UBC and are humbled by the trust the congregation has placed in us to represent the whole church in selecting our next senior minister.

The Search Committee meets the second Sunday of the month after the worship service and other times as needed.  We have met with the Leadership Transition Team (LTT) and received the church profile as well as a profile for our next senior minister.  The senior minister profile was developed from information gathered from the congregational meetings last spring.  (Remember the questions where different colored dots represented strongly agree, agree, disagree etc.?) The church profile was compiled by the LTT and will be available on the UBC website.  It will provide potential candidates with a window into UBC.

In September, the search committee decided to hire Bill Wilson, President of the Center for Healthy Churches, to assist in our search.  He is very familiar with UBC and will solicit candidates that he believes will be a good fit for us as well as recommendations we give him.  He has been instrumental in directing our efforts to define our timeline, organize our process, and in preparation to interview candidates.  Dr. Wilson will address the congregation January 15th, beginning with a joint Bible Study hour and then preach as well.

The search committee interviewed former and current UBC ministers, office staff, and friends of UBC (John Chandler, Dan Bagby etc.) to get input about their vision for our future and what traits they believe are important in our next senior minister.  This information will be considered along with the senior minister profile developed by the LTT.

We are actively soliciting resumes for our next senior minister. Resumes can be sent to UBCSeniorMinisterSearch@gmail.com.  We encourage anyone in the congregation who knows someone you feel would be a good fit for UBC to pass his or her name and contact information to a search committee member.  It may be someone who is quite happy in their current position and doesn’t yet know God is calling them to UBC.
