OTHER OPPORTUNITIES
Women’s Missionary Union (WMU) Circles
Kittie Colvin Trail Circle
We are a group of women, ages 49 to 70-something, from all walks of life, single to grandmothers, who come together to laugh and minister to each other, our community, and out into the world. During the school year we meet the first Tuesday of each month in members’ homes at 7:00 p.m. During the summer vacation months we meet at local restaurants for a time of catching up, and continued missions.
In addition to participating in all the church-wide ministries, Kittie Colvin Trail has adopted the University of Virginia Hospitality House as an on-going mission, providing from our abundance by providing items such as paper towels, individual snacks, and laundry supplies, and occasional collections of items that need replacing in their 8 kitchenettes. Through the CBF (Cooperative Baptist Fellowship) in Nada, Kentucky (one of the poorest communities in the U.S.), we have for many years sponsored a kindergarten class and provided these children with school supplies, books, and holiday treats they would otherwise go without.
Kittie Colvin Trail also sponsors a Christmas Post Office where church members can deliver their Christmas cards for other church members and donate the postage cost saved to Global Missions. We “adopt” a family through Albemarle County Schools and purchase clothing for the children at Christmas. We provide gifts and cards to UBC shut-ins at Christmas, their birthdays, and other holidays. We cook and serve dinners when UBC hosts area homeless men for two weeks through PACEM, and provide Sunday meals for Jubilate and our Youth Group. For more info, contact Sarah Buchanan at sarahbucha@gmail.com.
Annie Armstrong Circle
The Annie Armstrong Circle is a vibrant group of 30+ UBC ladies dedicated to continuing the work of our namesake, Annie Armstrong. She was a tireless advocate for missionaries who encouraged churches to support mission work through prayer and sacrificial giving.
Our group meets midday on the second Tuesday of each month in the UBC Fellowship Hall. We enjoy learning about how we can support local mission opportunities with various non-profits such as The Alyssa House, Yellow Door Project, Lilypads, AIM, LoveINC, and Georgia's Friends, Inc.
In the fall, we offer assistance to GraceInside, and in the spring to Olive Branch Ministries in Appalachia. Special projects include collecting items for refugee families and local school children. Please join us for fellowship, fun and service! For more information contact the church office 434-293-5106.
The Prayer Shawl Ministry
The prayer shawl ministry began in 2009, as a ministry of the Woman's Missionary Union of UBC. We have a small group of knitters, crocheters, and quilters who meet on the second and fourth Tuesday evenings of each month. We make shawls, lap robes, and quilts to give to members and friends of our church community in the event of a death, devastating diagnosis, or other personal trauma.
The tag we include with each gift says, “This prayer shawl was made especially for you with love and prayers. May you discover comfort and solace as you wear it. May it encircle you in God’s love and peace, now and always.” For more info, contact Sarah Buchanan sarahbucha@gmail.com.
PBJ Bible Study Group
Prayer, Bible Study, Joyful Fellowship
The PBJ Bible Study Group was formed in the fall of 2016 and meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays from 10:00-12:00, September through June, in Lynn Martin’s home. The members are Senior Adult Women who want to engage in serious study of God’s Word. When we meet, we share prayer concerns and often send cards from the group, enjoy snacks and conversation, and spend at least an hour in focused discussion of the Bible. We use a variety of materials to aid in our study. For more info, contact Lynn at Lmartinx2@comcast.net.
