Sunday Youth Group
Every Sunday during the school year, our youth gather together for Bible Study at 9:45 AM, and for Youth Group from 12:15-2:00 pm. Youth Bible Study is taught by David Waters, and Youth Group is led by our Associate Minister for Students, Val Fisk.
During youth group, we eat lunch and have fellowship together, study and learn from the word of God, play games, and grow in faith together. These events are for all youth in Grades 6-12. Members of our church provide lunch and participate in these activities alongside our youth.
In the 2021-2022 year, we studied the books of the Old Testament stretching from Genesis to 2 Kings, watching videos from The Bible Project each week and discussing what the various books of the Bible tell us about in narrative and in poetry. In the 2022-2023 year, we are continuing this study by focusing on the prophets of the Old Testament and how those prophets called for justice in ways that are still relevant in our lives today.

Special Trips and Events
Our students participate in special events and trips throughout the year! At the end of each summer, we take a trip together to enjoy one last fun event with graduated seniors before they leave for college or their next steps toward career training. In 2021, we went to East Tennessee, visited Dollywood theme park, and got to know a very friendly black bear that hung out around our AirBnB cabin! In 2022, we traveled to Williamsburg for a day at Busch Gardens and a day hanging out on the sand at Virginia Beach.
We also participate in opportunities for service alongside other churches, such as Mission Madness, an annual spring weekend hosted by CBF Virginia to allow youth to serve our cities across Virginia.
Worship & Service Opportunities
PACEM
UBC partners with other downtown churches in Charlottesville to provide an overflow shelter for the homeless during the winter months. For two weeks each winter our Fellowship Hall is shelter for those needing a place to spend the night when the Salvation Army is full. We provide dinner, a cot to sleep on, and breakfast in the morning. In the evenings, church members have the opportunity to visit with our guests, do their laundry, play games, watch movies, etc. The youth volunteer their their time and energy to cook, clean, and visit with all who are present.
O.I.A.M. (Operation Inasmuch)
Every spring U.B.C. organizes a focused one-day event that seeks to mobilize individuals to engage in hands-on projects for the benefit of those within the Charlottesville area. It usually occurs one Saturday in early spring and includes such projects as cleaning, painting, trash hauling, and yard work for elderly or disabled neighbors, area camps, and resource agencies such as Kluge Children’s Rehab Center and Hospice House. We also deliver flower arrangements and sew baby blankets, host neighborhood cook-outs and assist with Special Olympics. “And the King shall answer and say unto them, ‘Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.’” Matthew 25:40
Mission Trips
We participate in a variety of mission projects throughout the year.
In April of 2015, UBC hosted one of the CBFVA Mission Madness sites! Our youth group and youth council, along with other planning committees and volunteers from the church, coordinated food, mission projects, worship services and activities for over 200 youth from across the state! It was an amazing weekend.
Past mission trips have included trips to Lynchburg, Virginia, to participate in the CBFVA March Mission Madness, where our youth broke out into three work groups and in one day painted a large portion of a local church (inside and out), cleaned trash from 2 houses, and also cleaned out and painted the basement of another local church. We also took 10 of our youth to Raleigh, N.C. for a week long mission trip where we picked food for a local food bank, worked with a bunch of young men and the Boys & Girls Club, and helped organize a local Salvation Army shop.
