Michael Cheuk was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Rice University and his M.Div. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 2004, he completed his Ph.D. in Religious Ethics at the University of Virginia.
Michael and his wife, Beth, first joined UBC in 1993 when Michael entered the Religious Studies graduate program at UVa. Michael served for almost nine years as an Associate Minister at UBC before he was called to be the Pastor of Farmville Baptist Church in 2005. On June 17, 2012, Michael was called back to be the Senior Minister at UBC.
Michael is a Christian Leadership Coach, certified by the Coach Approach Ministries in Hickory, NC. He also enjoys reading, photography, singing, cooking, tinkering with computers, and taking walks with Beth, and their dog, Maggie. Michael and Beth have two children, Thea and Wesley.
Associate Minister for Music and Worship
Alba Beasley, our Associate Minister for Music and Worship, graduated from the University of Montevallo in December of 1977, having earned the Bachelor of Music Education degree. In 1982 he received the Master of Church Music degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Before coming to UBC, Alba served in churches in Texas, Alabama, and Virginia.
Alba’s wife, Pamela, teaches on the Performance Faculties at the University of Virginia and at James Madison University. The Beasleys’ two children, Benjamin and Lydia, are graduates of Shenandoah University. Lydia is pursuing a career in music; after teaching for several years, Ben is now in law school.
Youth Ministry Coordinator
Erin Hallissy Brown grew up in Hampton, VA. She then attended UVA and graduated with a BA in Psychology & Cognitive Science with Distinction and a Master of Teaching in Early Childhood Special Education. While at UVA, Erin was a member of Jubilate where she met her husband Will.
In 2011/2012, Erin and Will went to Israel where Erin taught English at the Nazareth Evangelical Theological Seminary. Will and Erin returned to Charlottesville and Erin taught Special Education at Murray Elementary.
Erin has worked in youth ministry at churches in Hampton and Orange VA and has experience as a lifeguard and camp counselor.
Erin and Will are the proud parents of one year old Luke. Erin is also the daughter of UBC members Jim and Pam Hallissy.
Will is our Ministry Resident for 2014-2016. Originally from Gretna, Virginia, Will came to Charlottesville to attend the University of Virginia, where he received a degree in Religious Studies and Music. While at UVA, he was involved in the Baptist Student Union and Jubilate, where he met his wife Erin, who was also involved with University Baptist Church.
After a short time working in the office at UBC, Will attended Yale Divinity School and earned his Master of Divinity degree. Erin and Will also lived for a year in Nazareth, Israel, as Venturers through the Virginia Baptist Mission Board, serving a small Arab Christian seminary before returning to Charlottesville.
After returning to the states, Will completed both a hospital chaplaincy internship and residency at UVA Medical Center.
Erin and Will are the proud parents of one year old Luke.
Hello! My name is Randi McFarland and I am a May, 2013 graduate of the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, VA. I am married to my husband Jim of forty years, and have three grown children, Mical, Jaime and Ashley. I also have five grandchildren with one on the way!
I was fortunate enough to be a stay-at-home mom while raising my children. While I realized that parenting was probably the most important job in the world, I had a longing to do something more. I went back to school at the age of forty-two to obtain a Master of Education degree with a concentration in Counseling. Beginning with my undergraduate degree in Psychology however, God had planted in me a desire to attend Seminary and although I made several attempts throughout the years, things did not fall into place until we moved to Virginia in 2005.
I commenced my seminary career with a CPE unit at UVA Hospital in the summer of 2008, and then began attending classes in Richmond in the spring semester of 2009. I also interned as a chaplain at Chippenham Medical Center in Richmond for seven months and was encouraged by my Site Team and Supervisor to continue in this line of work. Presently, I am hoping to get a Residency position in the fall of 2014 either at MCV or UVA Hospitals.
Barbara Taylor Moore
Barbara Taylor Moore has served as Organist and Principal Accompanist since 1987. She holds the Bachelor of Arts degree in music (piano and organ) from Mary Washington College, the Master of Music in Performance (organ) from Baylor University and has done postgraduate work at The University of Kansas and the Summer Organ Institute in Zwolle, The Netherlands. She is active as a private teacher of piano and organ and on the keyboard faculty of UVa. Barbara is a member of the local chapter of the American Guild of Organists and the Charlottesville Music Teachers’ Association and she is a volunteer firefighter with the Charlottesville Fire Co. Her husband, Jim, is also an active member of UBC.
Sue Walton has served as our Office Manager and Financial Secretary since 1984. She is a life-long resident of western Albemarle Co. and lives in beautiful Sugar Hollow. Her favorite pastimes are walking, hiking, reading and sewing. Sue is a member of Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church in White Hall and says she loves having two church families.
Stephanie grew up in New York State, one of seven children. Over the years, she lived in Connecticut, Florida, Mississippi, and Madrid, Spain before moving to Charlottesville 25 years ago with her family to be near her parents, who had retired here. She has two grown sons who live and work in Charlottesville.
Stephanie enjoys choral singing and is a member of the Virginia Consort. She also serves on their Executive Committee. Stephanie spent several years tutoring with the local Literacy Volunteers. At home, she enjoys reading and is a newbie knitter.
Thomas Hill, the longest serving member of our staff, has been our custodian since 1982. Thomas is well respected and is always helpful and cooperative. He and his wife Nellie have two sons and four grandchildren. Thomas’s favorite pastime is fishing.
